Core Target Five, health outcomes, is derived from five performance indicators (PI 17-PI 21): life expectancy at birth, cancer mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, infant mortality, and potential years of life lost. Health outcome rankings are the simple average of each province's rank on the five indicators.

British Columbia had the best health outcome performance among the provinces over the entire 1996 through 2005 period.

BC had the top rank for life expectancy at birth (2006/07), cancer mortality (2004) and overall health outcomes (2005). BC had second place ranks for cardiovascular mortality (2004) and potential years of life lost (2005) and a fourth place rank for infant mortality (2005).

Why It's Important
Health outcomes provide an indication of a jurisdiction's environment, health care system and the personal choices of its population.
